This encompasses studies of language use and all other forms of expression found in cultural and historical contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on artistic and musical expression, verbal and non-verbal expression with a focus on language contact, language varieties and diversity, language teaching methodology and studies of socio-cultural life-patterns, evaluation of curriculum development in the fields of training in the arts, of multilingualism and the acquisition of communication skills and critical media literacy.

Social dynamics, active citizenship and systems of solidarityHead of the research area: Prof. Susanne Elsen
This field encompasses the analysis of social systems, their effects and the adaptation requirements (with particular attention to social modernisation processes) and research-based planning, induction, monitoring and evaluation of measures aimed at planned social change. The emphasis is placed on active citizenship and sustainable community development. Research topics may include individuals, groups, organisations and municipalities and require the use of a participative and stimulating repertoire of methods, which, among others, may be found in communicative, ethnographical and social approaches to research.
