series of lectures: SOME HYDRAULIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS ON (MINI) HYDRO POWER PLANTS
Department
Faculty of Science and Technology
Description
The seminar will consider some hydraulic and environmental aspects of mini hydro power plants. Among the many, the hydraulic flow-turbines interaction of floating mini hydro will be considered.
Also the problem of sediment flushing from (large) reservoirs for desilting will be considered. Flushing is one of the most common and cheap procedures that operator takes for reservoir desilting. The environmental impact of such intervention are evident and still debated. The major problem related to flushing is the biological recovery time of the receiving river. This is linked to the silt erosion and transport capacity of the flow downstream. This problem can be schematized as a problem of solid transport of fine –cohesive- material on a gravel bed, for which the traditional approach according to the theory of Shields seems to have some limitations, which will be discussed.
