Cotutelle de thèse

The cotutelle de thèse was introduced in Italy in 1998 with a joint declaration signed by the Italian “Conferenza dei Rettori” (CRUI) and the French “Conférence des Présidents d’Université”. Thereafter, the CRUI has signed joint declarations also with Spain, Germany and Switzerland. However, a cotuelle de thèse can be initiated also with universities, whose countries have not signed a declaration with Italy.

What is the cotutelle de thèse?
The student carries out his/her doctoral work and research under the supervision of two supervisors, each from one of the two universities involved, alternating the study and research periods between both universities.
The examination commission (for the discussion of the doctoral thesis) is composed by international members.
The result of the cotuelle de thèse is a doctoral diploma recognized in both countries which can be either a joint degree (issued jointly by both universities and signed by the rectors of both universities) or a double degree (each university issues the respective national degree).
Any cotutelle de thèse requires individually for each doctoral student a specific cooperation agreement between the two universities regulating academic and administrative aspects.
he doctoral student registers at both universities and is exempted from the tuition fees at one of the universities.
