Postgraduate Teacher Training for Secondary School Teachers (SSIS)

University-based postgraduate teacher training for secondary school teachers has only been compulsory since the Ruberti Law of the 1990’s. The aim of the SSIS is to train future secondary school teachers and to grant them teaching certificates for the various subjects on successful completion of their studies.

Since many middle and high school  teachers already teach without teacher training, the faculty offers in-service part-time postgraduate teacher training courses in both German and Italian.

The  Italian Law No. 133 of 6th August 2008 suspended new enrolments to the Postgraduate Teacher Training Courses during the 2008/2009 academic year.
For the present only the courses which started in 2007 are being continued as the Italian ministry of education wishes to change the training of secondary school teachers. In future it won’t be necessary to study for 7 years (first degree, second degree plus teacher training) but just for 5. It is still not clear whether this will entail a combined study (3 years of a first degree plus 2 years teacher training) or an integrated study (5 years of degree integrated with teacher training) .

Furthermore, the 120 different study areas of  the secondary school teacher training programme are to be reduced by about half.

The SSIS is located at the Faculty of Education, which itself is a research center and promotes various pedagogical and teacher training initiatives.
