Until the late 1960s historical research largely neglected women's history. Since that time, a differentiated history of women and gender studies developed, which claims consideration of the category "gender" as relational category in all historical periods, with the goal to rewrite the so called General History with a gender-specific and intersectional view (gender, class, ethnicity/race).

In Regional History, the history of women and gender studies are still marginalized and underexposed despite a brisk demand from the public. Research projects on women and gender history are rare, the history of men is actually not present.

The research area shall counteract these deficits and especially focus on the "saddle period" between the 18th to the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century with the fascisms and total wars, as well as the time of transition in postmodernity with the central political and cultural movements of feminism in the 1970's and its impacts.
