Guido Orzes is the new President of EDSI

On 1st July Guido Orzes, associate professor in Management Engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology, has been appointed President of the European Decision Sciences Institute (EDSI), the European branch of the international Decision Sciences Institute.

EDSI is a non-profit professional organization of European researchers, managers, educators, and students interested in decision-making techniques and processes in private and public organizations. Its aim is to promote and disseminate multidisciplinary rigorous and relevant research about business decisions in the European context in a variety of fields, including but not limited to operations and supply chains, marketing, and finance.

Prof. Orzes, how did you become president of EDSI, and how long will be in charge?

Let’s say, it was a long way. I’ve co-chaired the EDSI 2018 conference in Udine and Venice (jointly organized by unibz e by the University of Udine) and have been a member of the board with different roles since 2018. Last year I was elected as President of the association, and after the first year as President-Elect, on 1st July 2022, I became President for 2022/2023. My mandate will be over by June 2024. I am really honored to be the president of this dynamic scientific association. I am looking forward to contributing to its growth and development with the support of the EDSI Board.

What are you planning to develop or improve while appointed?

My main goal will be to contribute to the organization of a successful annual conference - the next one in June 2023 in Nantes (France) – in order to give to experienced and young researchers the chance to be part of our community. European countries are currently facing some unprecedented challenges related to the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plans, the shortage of key materials in many sectors, the green transition, and the Ukraine war, just to mention a few. I would like to make sure that our academic EDSI community can contribute to supporting companies and policymakers in addressing these challenges. In addition, I would like to make EDSI activities well known in new countries (nowadays Germany, Italy, UK, and France are the nations with more associates), also attracting new members, in particular PhD students and young researchers.

Do you think that your new role can contribute to your research and teaching at unibz?

Yes. I think it can strengthen the international visibility of unibz in the field of industrial engineering and expand the possibilities of networking for future joint research projects, thesis works of our bachelor’s and master’s students, and mobility opportunities.
