Wikipedia plays a crucial role in the global information infrastructure. To ensure knowledge integrity, the content of Wikipedia articles must be attributable to reliable secondary sources in the form of references. In this seminar, we will review how Wikipedia editors apply this policy, community efforts to reduce the prevalence of unreliable sources, and existing research to support source reliability. In particular, special attention will be paid to recent works based on language-agnostic and multilingual approaches that benefit the many language editions of Wikipedia.
Pablo Aragón is a research scientist at the Wikimedia Foundation, where he focuses on knowledge integrity and resilience to disinformation in Wikipedia and its sister projects. He is interested in computational social science and social computing through interdisciplinary and participatory approaches. He is also an adjunct professor at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and actively contributes to technopolitical projects.
This seminar is an open lecture as part of the Human-Computer Interaction course in the Bachelor of Communication Sciences and Culture at unibz.
