We have always been fascinated by objectivity, but we have recently stopped taking it for granted, displaying its historicity by drawing attention to what counted as objectivity at various times and places. Claims to reality are ‘impure’ (they contain a bit of us). I will focus on the lessons to be learned from those who question objectivity, taking T.S. Kuhn as my starting point. I will then try to explain what can be said coherently on the (inter)subjective element in knowledge-making by focusing on J. Searle’s The construction of social reality. I will end by using the notion of double hermeneutics to rethink the epistemologically relevant difference between the natural and the social sciences.
