Short bio

Alex Putzer is a researcher on the rights of urban nature at NYU School of Law and Ca' Foscari University of Venice. As a UN Harmony with Nature expert and member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature World Commission on Environmental Law (IUCN WCEL), he documents and analyses the global development of the rights of nature. As Senior Science Manager at the German Ocean Foundation, he also actively works on European policies for marine conservation.

Alex studied media, communication and political science in Hamburg, Florence and Barcelona. He defended his PhD on the rights of urban nature with highest honours at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. He was a visiting researcher at the MIT Leventhal Centre for Advanced Urbanism, the University of Pennsylvania and the Urban Systems Lab at The New School in the USA. His mentor during his Fulbright-Schuman Postdoctoral Scholarship at NYU's Department of Environmental Studies was Jeff Sebo, one of today's leading environmental philosophers.

As a founding member of the Eco Jurisprudence Monitor, Alex documents and analyses the global development of the rights of nature. In addition to his academic work, he is a regular guest lecturer and teaches seminars at various universities in Europe. He has presented his work at the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (2024), the Interspecies exhibition at the MAC/CCB in Lisbon as well as the Venice Architecture Biennale (both 2025), among others.
