Conference paper „Regional Mountain Conference 2026“
Using the global UNWTO standard “Statistical Framework for Measuring Sustainable Tourism” (UN-SFMST) as an example, the presentation entitled “The Sustainability Discourse in Tourism: An Ethico-Philosophical Critique” identifies fundamental misconceptions and ethically blind spots in contemporary sustainability concepts and frameworks. Drawing on Buddhist philosophy, Professor Matthias Fuchs identifies epistemological shortcomings of Critical Rationalism as a primary cause. He then points to the unique sustainability concept of the South Tyrolean destination of St. Vigilio di Marebbe, certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). This approach is based on 16 ethical values, which are developed, continuously reinforced and refined through participatory dialogue with the local population, guests, and stakeholder groups, both within and outside the tourism sector.
