Empowering Regions, Inspiring Europe

SUNRISE Alliance

unibz is part of SUNRISE, a European alliance of nine small and medium-sized universities located in non-metropolitan regions. The alliance promotes cooperation with businesses and local stakeholders, expanding education, mobility, research and innovation, with a particular focus on STEAM subjects.

SUNRISE promotes a model of European collaboration that connects academic expertise, regional needs and international perspectives. Through joint activities, mobility programmes, innovative learning paths and collaborative research projects, the alliance helps develop talent, foster the exchange of knowledge and strengthen regional ecosystems.

Opportunities for students

For students, SUNRISE offers the opportunity to experience university life in a truly European dimension. The alliance provides opportunities for international mobility, both short- and long-term, through programmes such as Erasmus+, as well as participation in hackathons, summer and winter schools, innovative learning activities and international events. Students can engage with multicultural environments, expand their networks and enrich their academic path with skills and certifications recognised at European level. The offer also includes lifelong learning opportunities designed to support continued education beyond graduation.

Opportunities for academic staff

For professors and academic staff, SUNRISE offers a space for exchange and collaboration that enhances both teaching and research. The alliance supports the co-design of Joint Degrees and Double Degrees, the development of shared teaching modules and the exchange of good practices in teaching. At the same time, it facilitates access to European research and innovation networks, collaboration among laboratories, and the co-supervision of doctoral candidates, and it promotes the creation of consortia for European research projects. Through the Sunrise Staff Academy, academic staff can also take part in professional development and continuing education activities in an international context.

Opportunities for early-career researchers

SUNRISE provides PhD candidates and early-career researchers with a European ecosystem designed to support the growth of research. Opportunities include co-supervised theses, mobility periods and secondments at partner universities, access to shared laboratories and infrastructures, as well as participation in advanced courses and seasonal schools. Here too, the alliance promotes a lifelong learning perspective, offering tools and networks that remain valuable beyond the doctoral path.

Opportunities for administrative staff

The alliance also addresses technical and administrative staff, who can benefit from training activities, mobility experiences and exchange opportunities with European partners. Collaboration within SUNRISE makes it possible to share good practices, develop integrated services across institutions and strengthen skills that are useful for managing increasingly international university processes. For this group as well, the Sunrise Staff Academy represents a key instrument for professional development.

Collaboration with businesses and regional partners

SUNRISE also aims to strengthen dialogue between universities and their regions by involving businesses, institutions and regional partners in a European innovation-oriented ecosystem. Participating organisations can access an international community of expertise and talent in the STEAM field, contribute to the development of solutions for local challenges, take part in European projects and increase their visibility through collaboration with the alliance’s academic network. In this way, SUNRISE supports not only the international dimension of its partner universities, but also the growth and competitiveness of the regions in which they operate.

An open and connected European community

More than just a partnership between universities, SUNRISE is a European community that brings together people, ideas and institutions. The alliance is based on the belief that international cooperation can generate tangible value for students, university staff, research and regional communities.
