unibz structures its sustainability strategy around five core areas of action. These reflect the university’s legal mandate— teaching, research and public engagement—while also expressing our identity as a responsible, future-oriented institution in the heart of the Alps. With targeted measures in these areas, we actively shape transformation and contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Sustainability is a cross-cutting theme in many of our study programmes—from agricultural sciences to eco-social design. In addition, unibz offers specialised bachelor and master programmes that integrate sustainability through theory and practice. Our goal is to equip students across disciplines with the skills to lead societal and economic transformation. To make these efforts more transparent, all course offerings and syllabi are now classified according to one or more of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showing the multiple ways in which each course contributes to sustainability and allowing students to link their studies directly to global challenges.
We promote interdisciplinary research on ecological, economic, and social aspects of sustainability across all faculties. Our projects range from climate policy and biodiversity to sustainable agriculture, mobility, and innovation.
We see the university as a hub for exchange, dialogue, and participation. Through many sustainability focused events and initiatives such the student-led Sustainability Festival, we raise awareness and foster engagement in South Tyrol and beyond. As a founding member of the South Tyrolean Alliance for Sustainability, we maintain close ties with local government, business, and civil society.
We have set concrete goals to reduce our environmental footprint. These include improving energy efficiency, promoting low-carbon mobility, implementing sustainable procurement, and embracing circular economy practices.
Sustainability is not just a technical or scientific challenge, but a cultural one. We foster equality, diversity, inclusion, and well-being within our university community. Internal training, social responsibility, and participatory governance form the basis of a future-oriented organisational culture.
