Abstract: We analyze the relationship between attitudes towards citizenship acquisition, trust, and the slave trade in sub-Saharan Africa. The channel linking the slave trade to citizenship attitudes is represented by the persistentinfluence of the slave trade on trust. Alternative channels such as witchcraft beliefs and family structure are not able to generate the same distinctive pattern of linkages emerging with the slave trade.
