Firms' longevity in platform industries: The effects of platform´s density

During the past decade there has been rapid growth in the number of digital transaction platforms (hereafter simply referred to as platforms), i.e. web-based companies that create value by facilitating the exchange of goods and services between two or more groups of participants (Evans and Schmalensee, 2007; Gawer, 2014; Rochet and Tirole, 2003)

Platforms have spread in many contexts, including dating, freelance labor, accommodation rental, ride hailing, and good exchange between buyers and sellers and have given birth to new industries. Nowadays, some of the best-performing companies are platforms (e.g., AriBnB, Tencent, Uber).
