Outline:

This short workshop provides participants with a gentle introduction to geographic information system (GIS) data and discusses their growing potential for a variety of statistical and econometric analyses. The workshop is targeting researchers with a background in data analysis and modelling who would like to enrich the range of their applications concerning spatial data. The workshop is divided in three parts: (i) a theoretical introduction characterising the key features and types of spatial data, basic GIS data processing, visualisation, and spatial operations; (ii) an applied part introducing software, data options and numerical illustrations; (iii) a hands-on practical session where participants will work using the R computing environment to get familiar with GIS programming. The workshop is relevant to virtually all fields of empirical science dealing with spatial data, including economics, environmental science, and engineering.

Requirements:

A basic understanding of the R computing environment or similar is desirable. A recent version of R installed is recommended.
