In nature, the style of wines is determined by complex physiological processes that occur during plant growth, which define the chemical composition of grapes. Several of these processes are closely linked to terroir and some environmental factors that characterize vineyards. Soil, geomorphology, and climate conditions play a pivotal role in creating a wine's sensory attributes, quality, and style.
Geoecology is a multidisciplinary science that integrates geosciences with life sciences, focusing on the myriad influences of geological processes on historical and contemporary patterns of biogeography.
The mountains of the Alps, with their diverse and multifaceted geological features, represent an ideal and unique training ground for geo-ecological research on the science of terroir. Specifically South Tyrol, is an ideal location for interdisciplinary analysis of various environmental factors that can act as abiotic stresses on vine plants, affecting the quality of their wines. These factors are often contrasting and complex, which requires new research methods and an interdisciplinary approach to fully understand their impacts.
The presentation will provide an introduction to the geo-ecological characteristics of the South Tyrolean region, as well as the results of our recent research on wine terroirs. These have revealed new evidence about the mineral fingerprint of wines and minerals that affect soil fertility. Additionally, we have practical findings on the aromatic compounds and technical maturity of grapes in South Tyrol's wine region.
The seminar also highlights the importance of understanding the geo-ecological features of mountain environments as a key tool for addressing some of the most pressing ecological issues of our time. This includes tackling climate change and promoting sustainable management of water resources, and developing effective strategies to face these challenges in viticulture.
