Public administration and universities are drowning in complexity, delays, and inefficiencies - symptoms of deeply rooted bureaucratic processes. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often hailed as the silver bullet for digital transformation, it cannot deliver real impact without understanding the processes it aims to improve. In this talk, Wil van der Aalst, the “Godfather of Process Mining”,  makes the case for Process Mining as the ultimate tool to expose, analyze, and reduce bureaucratic overhead. At the heart of this transformation is Object-Centric Process Mining (OCPM), a powerful approach that maps the true behavior of complex systems involving multiple interacting entities like permits, students, cases, and payments—each with their own lifecycle. Unlike traditional process mining, OCPM captures these multi-object dynamics, revealing inefficiencies and compliance issues that block innovation. The talk also showcases how automatically discovered process models provide the missing link between data and AI—enabling contextualized, goal-oriented machine learning. Without a process lens, AI risks becoming just another black box. With it, we can finally make digital government and education more agile, transparent, and citizen-friendly.
