DC fast charging infrastructures play a key role in the electrification of transport, both for cars and heavy trucks.

Charging point operators require safe, efficient, reliable, durable, and compact chargers, while EV users expect ease of use, quick and intuitive connection, transparent tariffs, remote charge monitoring, and flexible payment methods.

Energy distributors also represent an important stakeholder, requiring chargers with excellent power quality on the AC side and full support of grid‑related and V2G functionalities.

Moreover, the multi‑megawatt peak power demand of large charging hubs often necessitates the integration of local energy sources, making energy storage systems and renewable generation essential elements in fast‑charging architectures.

Meeting all these requirements calls for highly sophisticated chargers, far beyond the basic AC/DC converter traditionally envisioned by electrical engineering.

Innovation is therefore crucial to keep system complexity and costs under control while delivering advanced performance.

Riccardo Morici, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Intellectual Property at Alpitronic, will introduce the technologies behind DC fast charging—standards, backend/frontend communications, and the DC charging process—along with an overview on future trends.
