In this seminar, Prof. Masatoshi Sasaki explores the thought of Martin Heidegger and the poetics of the Japanese haiku master Basho, highlighting how both thinkers reveal the essence of things through poetry. Starting from Heidegger’s critique of modern technology and its reduction of the world to mere usefulness, the talk emphasizes the role of art—especially poetry—as a means of uncovering truth and restoring a more authentic human experience. Drawing a parallel between Heidegger’s philosophy and Basho’s poetic principle of encountering things “as they are,” Prof. Sasaki proposes poetry as a path to reclaim a deeper, non-utilitarian relationship with the world.
