In the sustainability and digital sectors standards of different nature are used besides formal legal sources to regulate relationships and subjective positions. Recently, standards and certifications are more and more recalled by legal provisions.
So far, standards and certifications have not attracted the general attention in legal studies but their widespread use, and potential future usefulness, requires to meditate their nature and role. Standards in the sustainability area need to adapt to the sector’s evolving legal framework, while the digital sector requires standards that facilitate organizational compliance, and flexible enough to easily adapt to the needs of a constantly evolving market and field. In conclusion, the subject requires careful and in-depth study to be consistently understood within contemporary legal systems.
