We can think of arriving at economies decarbonised and circular, in a word sustainable, without understanding the ecological history of the places in which we live? Defining Europe is a slippery slippery business, because of its diversity, evolutionary history and its changing borders. This book is not intended to be a chronological account of natural events that have succeeded, but illustrates emblematic scenarios and events that will help us describe the relationship between man and environment.

Emilio Padoa-Schioppa teaches Ecology of the landscape, Biology and Didactics of Biology at the University of Milan-Bicocca, where he helped founding the Landscape Ecology Research Unit. deals with biodiversity conservation, monitoring of species, habitats and landscapes and assessment of the human footprint on the biosphere.
