Studio D2 - EXHIBIT

Semester 2 · 97170 · Bachelor in Design and Art - Major in Art · 19CP · IT · EN · DE

The course conveys fundamentals, specificities, working methods and theories of art – with a focus on exhibition design and curatorial studies – that consider the act of exhibiting not as functional to the presentation of a work, but as artistic practice per se.

Lecturers: Gerhard Glüher, Matilde Cassani, Claudia Mainardi

Teaching Hours: 90
Lab Hours: 0
Mandatory Attendance: not compulsory but recommended

Course Topics
Exhibiting means developing a sensitivity for specific things and positioning them in spaces so that they can develop their own evidence. Inherent in the word 'exhibit' is not only the meaning 'to exhibit', but also 'to expose' and 'to deliver'. Students will learn to care for their own work and expose it to the interaction with others and the Other. Students will go through this course from the very beginning and learn what it means to produce a professional exhibition: Networking, produce own artworks, curate the works of their peers, Location scouting, exhibition design, writing exhibition texts, doing press work and organizing documentation.

Teaching format
Seminars, guests seminars, collective discussions, individual or group presentations, practical exercises, on-site field research, reviews and studio critique, studio work

Assessment
Students will be assessed by their active participation in group activities, like discussions and presentations. Willingness to network throughout the semester forms the very foundation of the course. In fact, the success of the final group exhibition depends on the individual and collective promotion, both of the own work and of the group. The tireless development and translation (theoretical and practical) of the Class topics' into own artistic languages is a basic goal of the course. Therefore Attendance, Communication, Engagement and Willingness to share and network in pictorial, written and spoken ways are critical for the Evaluation at the end of the semester. N.B. ALL THE STUDENTS ATTENDING THE EXAM AS "OPT" OR AS NON ATTENDING STUDENTS MUST AGREE UPON THE CONTENTS WITH THE TEACHERS.

Evaluation criteria
The final evaluation is based on the commitment to the entire research process that will lead to the final project and, therefore, on the exercises and presentations. In particular: - The depth of the analysis conducted on the proposed case studies; - The ability to relate the topics addressed during the study with one's own artistic practice; - Consistency in the decisions made to produce the result; - Completeness of the different research, innovative methods and appropriate use of linguistic and textual production.

Module A — Exhibition as Artistic Practice

The course aims to convey the fundamentals, specificities, working methods and theories of space and installation art.

Lecturers: Matilde Cassani

Teaching Hours: 90
Lab Hours: 0

Course Topics
The possible subjects and possibilities of doing a show are fundamentally unlimited. The idea of exhibiting includes seeking, locating, organizing, commissioning, producing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining objects that are of interest to a specific thesis. To curate is to care for, to take care of, something. The subject is open, and the alternatives are infinite. We can define the act of exhibiting as a series of deliberate choices to communicate an idea. Exhibiting, thus, can be considered as an artistic practice. During the semester, students will be asked to focus on a specific exhibition, according to their own interests, and design both its content, location, and display. Theoretical lessons and invited guests will give insights and examples of curated exhibitions (historical or extremely contemporary). Practical exercises, collective discussions, individual and group reviews will complete the class hours.

Teaching format
Exhibition Making (theoretical & practical); Placing Objects in Space; Location Scouting (Field trips, Meeting Curators, and artists); Taking Care of Text work and Communications; Exhibiting as artistic practice.
