The course Economic Policy and Institutions examines contemporary issues in economic policy, including fiscal and monetary policy design and their institutional context.
• Students learn to analyze the rationale for public intervention in the economy, evaluate policy effects, and understand the role of institutions in shaping outcomes.
• The course combines theoretical frameworks with empirical tools to assess economic policies in real-world institutional settings.

The foundations of economic policy; Empirical tools for the analysis and evaluation of public policies; Budgetary institutions and policies; Monetary and exchange rate institutions and policies;

The frequency of the courses Macroeconomica and Microeconomics is warmly suggested in order to properly follow these lectures

Educational objectives
ILO (Intended Learning Outcomes) ILO 1 Knowledge and understanding ILO 1.1 ability to understand the role of governments in market economies; ILO 1.2 ability to understand complex economic texts in the three languages of instruction ILO 2 Ability to apply knowledge and understanding ILO 2.1 ability to assess the appropriateness of monetary and fiscal policies with respect to macroeconomic variables ILO 2.2 ability to interact with native speakers in a fluent and spontaneous manner on economic topics; ILO 2.3 ability to understand the role of the state in relation to different political-economic issues and weigh up possible solutions in the political-economic field ILO 2.4 ability to set goals, objectives, expectations and decisions in public administration; ILO 2.5 ability to apply economic models to real problems that require or result from government intervention (political/market failure); ILO 3 Making judgements ILO 3.1 Acquisition of the capacity for judgement and methodological tools useful for the critical analysis of data, sources, assumptions and implications of scientific practice, and of the political, ethical and legal context within which economic phenomena are embedded and with which they interact ILO 4 Communication skills ILO 4.1 Fluency (oral and written) in Italian, German and English, including translation between these languages. Assessment
70% written exam, 30% project report (ILO 1-5). The project is compulsory for attending students. Non attending students will be evaluated 100% on the written exam (ILO 1-5). For attending students only, there will be an optional mid-term exam.

Evaluation criteria
Evaluation criteria relevant for both assessments: clarity of answers, mastery of specific terminology, ability to summarize, evaluate, and establish relationships between topics, ability to apply concepts to real-world examples.
