Principles of Sociology

The course provides a general overview of the scientific content and foundations of sociology in terms of basic concepts, theories and methods of sociological knowledge. The distinction between micro-, meso- and macro-sociology and their respective theoretical frameworks will be introduced.

Educational objectives
Principles and foundations of sociology sps07 general sociology, area di base The aim of the course is to provide students with a general ability to understand social dynamics and their overall implications in contemporary society. The learning outcomes need to refer to the Dublin Descriptors: - Knowledge and understanding - Applying knowledge and understanding - Making judegments - Communication skills - Learning skills

Assessment
- written exam - (open-ended questions) + oral exam + applied projects to be discussed during lectures/class presentation/written paper (min. 15 pp. + bibliography) to be agreed with the lecturer and submitted 20 days before the exam date.

Evaluation criteria
The final grade will be based on: relevant to the written exam (with questions): ability to interact with the concepts and theories and apply them to everyday situations; logical structure, ability to argue, accuracy, etc. For the oral exam: - expressive skills and abilities, - argumentative skills, - critical analysis skills, - synthesis skills, - reflectivity For project, classroom presentation or written essay, the following will be assessed: - communication skills - ability to summarise - argumentation skills - relevance to the course topics

Required readings

Textbooks will be indicated on the first day of class. They will then be available in the power point in the first lecture of the course.



Supplementary readings

Each lecture will have a specific supplementary bibliography for any further study of the topic covered.
