Contemporary South-Tyrolean history and the teaching of it (lab.)

After a general introduction by the lecturer, the main topics listed below are worked on by the students in plenary sessions. In the course of the lecture, the students deepen and consolidate the knowledge they have gained by working individually or in groups on several assignments. Each thematic unit is followed by a discussion in which the respective phase of South Tyrolean contemporary history is not only considered in isolation, but also placed in a national and global context.

Course Topics
South Tyrol's path into the 20th century, the First World War, the division of Tyrol, fascism, the option, resettlement, the Alpine Foreland Operational Zone (1943-1945), the situation in 1945, the Gruber-De Gasperi Agreement, Sigmundskron 1957, the South Tyrol question before the UN, assassinations, the "Package" and the operational calendar, the 2nd Statute of Autonomy, social upheavals in the second half of the 20th century, the "Durnwalder era", South Tyrol in the 21st century.

Teaching format
Lecture by the lecturer, discussion, research, indexing and interpretation of various historical sources and forms of presentation of contemporary South Tyrolean history.

Educational objectives
Develop the ability to acquire knowledge about a regional problem and to categorise it in an international context; Developing the ability to form factual and value judgements against the background of incomplete or deliberately false representations of history; Develop the ability to communicate acquired historical knowledge precisely and correctly (narrative competence); Developing the ability to promote understanding for the coexistence of ethnically different language groups. Expected learning outcomes and competences: Knowledge and understanding: Basic historical knowledge of contemporary South Tyrolean history; Knowledge of different contemporary historical sources and historical representations. Application of knowledge and understanding in connection with judgements: Perception of contemporary historical events and processes; critical development of sources from the past and historical representations; interpretation of different sources and representations leading to a general factual judgement and a personal value judgement. Communicating: Ability to use different forms of communication to convey complex historical content in an understandable way. Learning strategies: Methodological competence that applies an appropriate method of indexing and strategy of interpretation for the respective source criticism and for the deconstruction of historical representations.

Assessment
Oral examination that requires candidates to make independent considerations and judgements in addition to knowledge of the content.

Evaluation criteria
Logical structure; clear argumentation; formal correctness; ability to recognise and critically analyse connections.
