Mediation with children (Lab.)

Semester 1 · 12554 · 5 year master degree in Primary Education - German section · 2CP · DE

The aim of the elective is to develop a constructive attitude towards conflicts. Conflicts should be seen as an opportunity to improve the current situation and so-called win-win solutions should be sought. By adults taking a step back, children are given the opportunity to take their conflicts into their own hands and resolve them mediatively. The promotion of communication, sensitisation to feelings and their expression should begin at an early age. Anger is reduced and active listening is learnt through targeted exercises. From communication games to non-violent conflict resolution strategies - children should be able to conduct mediations themselves.
Specific examples from everyday (classroom) life are taken up and analysed in a child-friendly way. In the process, the children get to know and appreciate themselves and their classmates better. The pupils work out solutions to conflict situations independently. The basic idea is that conflicts should be recognised as part of everyday life and addressed constructively.
In order to achieve this, it is important to get to know each other better in such situations and to understand how a conflict is structured and what dynamics can develop. An introduction to conflict theories, conflict situations and strategies as well as the principles of mediation and their practical application with children is part of the event.
The aim of the event is to use practical tips and materials to learn how to support children in dealing with conflicts and to reflect on one's own attitude.
