The Quality Assurance (QA) system of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is developed in accordance with the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) and with the national model defined by ANVUR within the framework of the AVA system.
The Quality Committee and the Evaluation Committee are the central bodies of the University’s QA system.
The Quality Committee, as an internal body, coordinates and monitors Quality Assurance processes, defines tools and procedures, and supports academic and administrative structures in their implementation.
The Evaluation Committee, as an independent body, verifies the effectiveness of the QA system and serves as the institutional interlocutor with the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and ANVUR.
Quality Assurance is understood as a systemic and participatory process involving the entire university community—students, academic staff, and technical-administrative staff—as well as representatives of the local community and the working world. The system is oriented toward the continuous improvement of teaching, research, and third mission/societal impact activities, in accordance with the principles of transparency, accountability, and shared responsibility.
Within the University’s intranet, there is a dedicated section on Quality Assurance which, on the information site “Quality Assurance”, collects information on QA tools as well as an archive containing all previous documentation. Access to the archive is restricted, via a unibz account, to those involved in QA processes.
The AVA system (Self-evaluation – Periodic Evaluation – Accreditation) is the national Quality Assurance model defined by ANVUR and adopted by Italian universities. Introduced in 2013 and subsequently updated, AVA promotes the continuous improvement of the quality of teaching, research, and phd programmes.
The model is based on an integrated system of internal self-evaluation and external evaluation: universities develop processes for the design, management, and monitoring of educational and research activities, while ANVUR conducts an independent and transparent external review.
The outcome of the process is the Accreditation decision, through which a university – and its Study and PhD Programmes – is recognized as meeting (initial accreditation) or maintaining over time (periodic accreditation) the required quality standards.
The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano obtained periodic accreditation under the AVA 2 system, formalized by Ministerial Decree n. 220 of 19.06.2020 issued by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
The AVA system pursues three main objectives:
