Mental Health and Illness in the Life Cycle

The course will cover the various aspects of mental health and psychiatry, starting with the history of psychiatric disorders and moving on to the most recent knowledge regarding nosography, psychopathology, neurobiology, genetics and psychopharmacology. The main notions concerning the organisational aspects of psychiatric services in Italy will also be illustrated, and the basics concerning some of the main medico-legal aspects of psychiatry will be covered. There will be a theoretical part with lectures and the presentation of clinical cases representative of the main psychiatric clinical pictures. The theoretical part will include interactive discussion of the topics covered. As part of the discussion of clinical cases, there will also be practical exercises in small groups with a final plenary return/discussion, which will aim at learning the evaluative/diagnostic and clinical/relational management knowledge of the different types of psychiatric patients in clinical practice.

Course Topics
- mental health throughout life, history and public perception; the stigma attached to psychiatric disorders - elements of the history of psychiatry and the phenomenon of deinstitutionalisation - the organisation of mental health departments in Italy; Law 180; the concept of territorial service; the Mental Health Action Plan (2013) - social intervention in an integrated multidisciplinary approach to care (the service network; the multi-professional team; home management; the individual therapeutic project) - social psychiatry; outlines of rehabilitation in its various aspects (self-care/living environment; housing; work) - outlines of general psychopathology - the main mental disorders according to the biopsycho-social etiopathogenetic model and the current classification system o schizophrenia and psychosis o bipolar disorder o depression o anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder o personality disorders o ADHD (in brief) o eating disorders (overview) o alcohol and substance abuse disorders (hint: the concept of dual diagnosis) - notions of psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation approaches, models and techniques related to individual disorders - basic elements of psychopharmacology - psychotherapy: overview of types, principles and techniques - interaction, communication and management of patients with a psychiatric disorder - crisis management and prevention - elements of forensic medicine: Compulsory Health Treatment, consent to treatment, protection of privacy.

Teaching format
Teaching will be based on - lectures with the aid of power-point presentations and multimedia content - interactive discussion and discussion of the topics covered - small group work and role-play - discussion of clinical cases

Educational objectives
Basic area objectives - Acquisition of theoretical knowledge concerning o organisational aspects of psychiatric services in Italy o founding legislative and medico-legal aspects (Law 180; the TSO) o the Mental Health Action Plan (2013) Characterising area objectives - acquisition of theoretical knowledge regarding: o diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation of major psychiatric disorders - acquisition of practical knowledge regarding o management in work practice of people suffering from psychiatric disorders in the various stages of the illness (acute, chronic, emergency) o how to collaborate with different professional figures in a multidisciplinary team o the individual therapeutic project o how to collaborate with network services (e.g. employment office; Addiction Service; Social Services) Objectives related integrative area - Acquisition of generic knowledge concerning: o neuroscience (e.g. genetics, epigenetics, RDoC) o scientific research in psychiatry o the use of scientific search engines (Pubmed) o guidelines for different psychiatric disorders o management and understanding of bibliography Disciplinary areas: - Psychiatry - Psychotherapy - Psychiatric Rehabilitation - Psychopharmacology Students are expected to demonstrate that they - have acquired through the content of the lectures and the study of the recommended bibliography, knowledge and comprehension skills concerning the main psychiatric clinical pictures, their diagnosis, treatment and management of patients affected by them, including crisis management. They must also have acquired knowledge and comprehension skills concerning the historical, organisational and institutional aspects of Italian psychiatry and the main medico-legal issues; - be able to apply the knowledge and comprehension skills acquired in relation to the above-mentioned topics in professional situations, as well as in sustaining, with mastery of the arguments, discussions and solving problems in their field of study - have acquired the ability to collect and interpret data relating to the above topics, so as to be able to draw their own conclusions and to reflect on issues relevant to their field of study - to be able to communicate information and ideas, to be able to handle problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors, in the working environment as well as within the service network - have developed the learning skills necessary to manage study in the psychiatric field with a good degree of autonomy.

Assessment
- The examination will be written with 30 multiple-choice questions. - Each question will consist of 4 answers of which only one is correct. - Each correct question corresponds to one point. - To pass the examination, at least 18 out of 30 questions must be answered correctly. - The final assessment will be in 30.es based on the number of correct answers. - The content of the questions will be aimed at examining - The knowledge related to the theoretical topics covered in the lectures (for those who did not attend the lectures can be found on the slides available to the students/students) and/or illustrated in the chapters of the textbook as provided in the course syllabus. -The ability to apply the knowledge acquired in professional situations concerning the management of individuals suffering from psychiatric disorders (psychotic disorders/schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, personality disorders). These questions may relate to the type of needs/areas of intervention in the various areas of life (work, living situation, leisure time, etc.) that the person may have based on the diagnosis. In addition, they may also ask about possible types of professional intervention required on the basis of possible needs/aspects in deficit with respect to the given diagnosis. Finally, questions may be asked about any specific difficulties in professional management arising from the psychiatric disorder from which the person suffers.

Evaluation criteria
- 27/30 questions concerning knowledge related to theoretical topics (mark from 0/30 to 27/30) corresponding to 90% of the total mark - 3/30 questions concerning the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in professional situations concerning the management of individuals with psychiatric disorders (mark from 0/30 to 3/30) corresponding to 10% of the total mark
