New Funding: LabGPT — Sustainable Energy & Green PowerTrain Laboratory

How can our province accelerate the energy transition with hydrogen and next-generation batteries while enabling resilient, low-carbon mobility?

Prof Renzi – member at the Competence Center for Sustainability and the Faculty of Enginnering received funding for his research project “LabGPT” from EFRE/FESR infrastructure grant. With a €1M budget over 3 years (start by the end of 2025), LabGPT will establish cutting-edge facilities to develop, test, and validate hydrogen and electric storage technologies that integrate seamlessly with renewable energy and heavy-duty mobility.

What we are building on innovations for the province

The plannend facility will support optimization strategies for system-level management, including the integration of hydrogen with variable renewables and applications in heavy-duty vehicle powertrains.

  • Hydrogen for energy and mobility: Development of new solutions and strategies for integrating hydrogen into energy systems and green powertrains.
  • Reversible fuel cells: R&D to lower the cost of the hydrogen chain via reversible (electrolyzer/fuel cell) systems.
  • Next-gen batteries: Development of innovative, eco-friendly materials and electro-thermal performance characterization to improve durability and range in EVs.

Why it matters

To reach energy independence and climate targets, our grids must absorb more renewables while staying reliable. LabGPT addresses this challenge by advancing smart storage, conversion, and management technologies.
