The University Council is the leading body of the University and its members stay in office for four years.
Born in Bressanone, Federico Giudiceandrea is an engineer by training (he studied Electronic Engineering at the University of Padua) and an entrepreneur and manager in the high-tech sector. He is the founder and Chairman of Microtec, where he heads the Research and Development department. Alongside his business activities, he has held institutional and associative roles: from 2009 to 2015 he was president of EOS (Export Organisation Südtirol), from 2017 to 2021 president of Confindustria Alto Adige, and from 2021 to 2025 president of SWREA (Südtiroler Wirtschaftsring-Economia Alto Adige). He is currently a member of the board of the Bolzano Chamber of Commerce and the Tech board of NOI Techpark. He was also Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Museion and is one of the world's leading collectors, curators and experts on the work of Dutch engraver and graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher.
Born in Bolzano, she grew up in a bilingual environment. She is a professor and researcher in Education Sciences at the Alpe-Adria University of Klagenfurt. She obtained her PhD in General Pedagogy, Social Pedagogy, and General Didactics from the Faculty of Education Sciences at the Free University of Bolzano. She is involved in teacher training and language teaching at the universities of Bolzano and Trento, as well as continuing professional development with all three provincial offices of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen: the Continuing Education and Languages Office of the German Culture Department, the Bilingualism and Foreign Languages Office of the Italian Culture Department and the Ladin Culture Department of Education and Culture. She has worked at the Institut für Erziehungswissenschaft und Bildungsforschung in the field of adult education and vocational training at the Faculty of Culture and Education Sciences at the University of Klagenfurt for over ten years, where she teaches and conducts research.
Alex Weissensteiner is a professor of quantitative finance. He completed his doctoral studies at the Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck. In the following years, he conducted research and taught at the Universities of Innsbruck and Liechtenstein. In 2013, he accepted the position of Professor for Financial Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. At the Free University of Bolzano, he served as Coordinator of the Quality Committee (2016-2020), Vice-Dean for Studies (2018-2020), Study Course Director of the Bachelor in Economics and Management (2015-2020), and Vice-Rector for Studies (2020-2024). He teaches subjects such as financial mathematics, financial risk management, and quantitative finance. His research interests lie in asset allocation and both theoretical and empirical asset pricing. He has published in leading journals in his field. Alex Weissensteiner is fluent in German, Italian and English.
André Comploi, who hails from Al Plan de Mareo/San Vigilio di Marebbe, studied theatre studies and musicology at the University of Vienna. He is currently director of the Department of Ladin Education and Culture of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and artistic director of the Haydn Foundation of Bolzano and Trentino. From 2010 to 2020, he headed the press office of the Vienna State Opera and from 2020 to 2025 he was artistic coordinator of La Scala in Milan. He has taught at the University of Vienna and the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, holds international masterclasses in cultural management and is a member of scientific committees of numerous cultural institutions in Austria and abroad. As a promoter of Ladin musical culture, he has published several collections of Ladin songs, including some for children, and has published academic articles on theatre and Ladin music. Since 2022, he has been a member of the artistic and academic advisory board of the Ferruccio Busoni – Gustav Mahler Foundation and a member of the University Council of the Free University of Nozen-Bolzano.
A lawyer by profession, Karl Zeller graduated in business administration and law from the University of Innsbruck and has held leading positions in national institutions throughout his career. He has extensive parliamentary experience in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate (six terms) and from 1994 to 2018 was a member of the joint committees of the Six and the Twelve for the Statute of Autonomy of the Trentino-Alto Adige Region.
Mastrobuoni is a full professor of Economics at the University of Turin and holds positions of national and international importance. He is currently Deputy Director of the Collegio Carlo Alberto in Turin and holds the Intesa Sanpaolo Chair, as well as being a research fellow at prestigious international academic institutions. Perfectly bilingual (Italian-German), Mastrobuoni holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University and has conducted research and taught at numerous leading universities and research centres in Europe and the United States. A recognised authority in the fields of public economics, the economics of crime, labour economics and applied econometrics, Prof. Mastrobuoni has produced high-level scientific work published in leading international journals, as well as significant experience in academic management and research evaluation.
Günther Mathà was a member of the founding team of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, has been its Managing Director since 2012 and has been an advisory member of the University Council since then. A journalist by training, he holds a Master's degree in philosophy and training in higher education management from the University of Fribourg/Switzerland, the London Business School and an IDM-C in global management from INSEAD in Fontainebleau.
Elisa Bortolotti represents students on the University Council since June 2024.
Dott. Luis Durnwalder is since 2002 Honorary President of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
