The course aims at strengthening students’ production and receptive skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening). Specific educational objectives include the following:
- to improve both grammatical range and accuracy and lexical range and appropriateness
- to improve reading comprehension through skimming and scanning activities of complex texts
- to improve writing skills, with particular focus on the structure of formal academic discourse.

Argomenti dell'insegnamento
The course focus in on key language skills for formal communication. This includes the following: Approaches to critical reading - Working in a language not your own - Summarizing & paraphrasing Specific & problematic grammatical constructions - The perfect aspect in English - "-ing" forms & infinitives - articles - sentence structure Vocabulary & vocabulary building - English patterns of word-formation - Vocabulary in context The fundamentals of formal/academic ("scientific") writing - The foundational structural conventions of essays & reports - Cohesion & coherence - Hedging - Register

Modalità di insegnamento
Classes will include exercises of different kinds, including pair & group work. The main teaching format will be the dialogic lesson. Active participation is strongly encouraged.

Modalità d'esame
70% final written exam, 30% oral exam The written exam Divided into two parts – Use of English & a Writing Task: • Use of English. This is worth 30% of the written exam mark. Students must pass this section, in order to have their writing task marked. • Writing Task This is worth 70% of the overall written exam mark. You must pass the written exam to be eligible for the oral exam. • Oral Exam. A presentation and discussion based on a given topic. Optional cum laude/extra credit tasks. These will be made available throughout the semester, which combined allow for a maximum of 2 points out of 30. These points are added after the final exam result. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively in formal and academic ("scientific") English at the CEFR level of between B2 and C1.
